OK, I know you recognize it. We’ll get there….
An ‘it’ girl in the 60’s was usually very young , single, attractive/cute and up to date with the latest styles and trends.
Pat DiNuzio knew about Jean Shrimpton and her legs:
And David Bowie had Twiggy aka ‘Twink the Wonder kid’:
Laugh-in spawned several ‘It’ Girls. First, Just Carne (on the left with the boots).
She left the show, finding it ‘boring’. Her career faded quickly, and she developed addiction issues. The black girl was the stunning Teresa Graves. She was given her own show, ‘Get Christie Love’. But before she started filming, she became born again and refused to wear mod clothes, be sexy, etc. and the show was abandoned.
Middle of our picture is ‘Goldie’ [Hawn], the brightest “It” star. She began as a dancing girl on the show, with ‘hip’ sayings and puns written on her bikini-clad body in bright purples and reds. She was ‘the dumb blond’, laughing nervously as she blew her lines. But her laugh was so contagious, everyone giggled like a moron when she lost it. Goldie’s hair, wide-eyed looks, and bikini body made her an ‘It’ girl to close the decade.
And now, Peggy Lipton, aka Julie of the Mod Squad. “One Black, One White, One Blonde.”
Those eyes…..did they shine in the dark? Boys under 17 were speechless; those brown jewels promised 1001 (non Arabian) nights beyond compare.. She didn’t have to wear skirts, dresses, low cut stuff, etc; it was Peggy! And of course, every third episode Julie was either: 1) in danger by some baddie, or 2) in love with someone who hurt her (or worse, murdered someone). After the show died, she didn’t want the notoriety, so she married Quincy Jones (back then, racially mixed marriages was still unheard of) and became a full time mom.
But she did release an album. Even though she had the good taste to cover Laura Nyro on her album, it’s always a bad sign when there’s way too many backup singers….exhibit 1:
OK, now we can go out with the same show we came in on……………
